THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME
DIRECTOR: Lauren Stock
PRODUCTION ROLE: Set Designer
PRODUCTION OVERVIEW: This performance of Simon Stephen’s play was a key part of Stock’s 2020 thesis project concerning accessibility in theater. The story about a neurodivergent boy navigating death, complex family dynamics, and new frontiers asked for scenery that could quickly adapt to reflect the main characters’ mindset and surroundings, while also accommodating custom projections. In the midst of a socially-distanced semester, we utilized an open performance space that would be filmed for digital distribution to audiences. I developed a set of rolling panels that the stage crew could easily align to a number of set positions, in order to catch rear projections from several angles. Complimented by a set of boxes that performers carried to create levels at select moments, this scenic approach brought both structure and obstacles to the stage as the narrative required.
