THE DREAM CIRCUS PROJECT
DIRECTORS: Elizabeth Woolford & Michayla Robertson-Pine
PRODUCTION ROLE: Assistant Prop Master
PRODUCTION OVERVIEW: Inspired by Erin Morgenstern’s 2011 novel The Night Circus, The Dream Circus Project brought a devised immersive theater experience to Wesleyan University's '92 Theater. The directors aimed to bring the story’s mysterious traveling carnival to life with performers who built their own characters from scratch and provided personal possessions to anchor their own discrete spaces across the show. For each 45-minute performance, small audiences of 18 people met together in an exterior lobby, before being invited under the “big top” inside the ‘92 Building. After an opening sequence, lights cut out as performers grabbed individuals or small groups and led them elsewhere to participate in intimate scenes with the distinct members of the circus troupe. I assisted props master Sophie Green in sourcing artifacts and dressing each space in the show, composing each moment to fit the identity of its character and immerse audience members in the magical moments of performance.
